Henry William Ralston

Henry William Rothstein (Raltson) was born November 8, 1881 in Brooklyn, New York.  His parents were Henry William Rothstein (1834-1905) and Frances Stampf Rothstein (1847-?)

The Brooklyn City Directory for 1888-1889, 1890, 1890-1891, 1894 lists Henry W. Rothstein living at 270 Ewen.  His occupation is Ferry Master.

The Brooklyn City Directory for 1894-1895 lists Henry W. Rothstein living at 221 South Third Street.  His occupation is Ferryman.

The 1892 New York State Census, dated February 16, 1892, shows Henry Rothstein (Ralston) living in Brooklyn. Note that the name is spelled Rothstine in the census book.

In 1897, Rothstein (Ralston) was attending Adelphi College in Brooklyn as a first year student.

The 1900 United States Census, taken on June 14, 1900, lists him as age 18.  His occupation is Assistant Bookkeeper. His father’s occupation is listed as Ferry Master.  His residence is listed as 221 South 3rd Street in Brooklyn.

Henry Rothstein died in 1905 at approximately age 71.

The 1910 United States Census, dated April 22, 1910, shows Henry Rothstein (Ralston), age 28, still living with his family.  His mother, Francis, is listed as Head of the Family.  His occupation is Manager at a Publication House.  The family is living in Amenia located in Dutchess County.

The 1915 New York State Census, dated June 1, 1915, lists his occupation as Editor.  He is still living with his family. The residence address is listed as Amenia Road Section.

Henry Rothstein (Ralston) married Florence Bedell Clark on August 11, 1915.  The license was applied for on August 8, 1915. Note: The Rothstein name is the one recorded in the marriage book.  An article in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, dated August 16, 1915, announces the wedding.  Ralston is listed as the son of Mrs. Frances Rothstein of 656 Jefferson Avenue.  The couple were married at the Church of the Good Shepherd on McDonough Street in Brooklyn.  The couple will reside at Battle Hill Park in White Plains, New York.

Henry Rothstein’s (Ralston) draft card for World War I is dated September 12, 1918.  His residence is listed as 12 Concord Avenue in White Plains.  His occupation is Circulation Manager for Street         & Smith Corporation.

The 1920 United States Census, dated January 22, 1920, shows Henry Rothstein (Ralston) living at 12 Concord Avenue, White Plaines, New York.  His wife and daughter (age 2) are living at the same address.

The White Plains City Directories for 1921-1924 all show Henry Rothstein (Ralston) living at 12 Concord Avenue, White Plaines, New York.  His occupation description varies between Mgr and Pub.

The 1925 New York Census lists Henry Ralston (Rothstein) living at the same address as 1920.  His occupation is listed as Manager of Publishing House.  He lives with his wife, daughter, and son.  This document uses the name Ralston. All the documents prior to this date used the name Rothstein.

The White Plains City Directories for 1925 all lists Henry Ralston living at 12 Concord Avenue, White Plaines, New York.  His occupation description is Mgr.  The directory lists Frances Ralston (widower) and Clara Ralston living at 5 Concord Avenue.

The 1926 and 1928 White Plains City Directory both show Henry Ralston living at 12 Concord Avenue with his wife Florence.

The 1930 White Plains City Directory shows Henry Ralston living at 22 Macy Avenue with his wife Florence. His occupation is listed as Publisher.

The 1930 United States Census, dated April 4, 1930, shows Henry Ralston living at 22 Macy Avenue.  His occupation is listed as Circulation Manager in the publishing industry.  His wife and two children are also in residence.  There is also a servant listed living at the same address.

The White Plains City Directory for 1931, 1932, and 1934 all show Ralston living at 22 Macy Avenue.

The 1940 United States Census, dated May 11, 1940, shows Henry Ralston living at 22 Macy Avenue with his family and a live-in servant.  His occupation is Manager in the Publishing industry.

Ralston’s draft card dated April 25, 1942 lists his age as 60.  He is still living at 22 Macy Avenue.  His employer is listed as Street & Smith Pub. 79 Seventeenth Avenue, New York City.  The card is signed Ralston rather than Rothstein.

Henry Ralston died on November 18, 1968 in White Plains, New York.

Moving along through “The King Maker” last night. This is one of the Nostalgia/Sanctum editions which contains some of the original interior illustrations. The drawing of Monk has always intrigued me as it reminds me of my wife’s Grandfather. Last night I realized it reminded me of another person.
